According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), just 20.5 percent of the 9.16 million automobiles registered in the European Union in the first nine months of 2021 were equipped with diesel engines. In comparison, the proportion was 29% from January to September 2020.
If the percentage of diesel automobiles declined by nearly 9%, the share of gasoline-powered vehicles fell by a comparable amount. Thus, if gasoline-powered cars accounted for no less than 50.3 percent of all automobile registrations in the first nine months of 2020, they fell to 41.3 percent in the same period this year.
Hybrid propulsionvehicles (HEV), on the other hand, have gained footing, accounting for no less than 19.4 percent of the total in 2021, 8.8 percentage points more than in 2020.
In addition, the percentage of cars with plug-in hybrid propulsion systems (PHEV) has climbed from 4% in 2020 to 8.6% in 2021, while 100% electric cars (BEV) accounted for 7.6% of total registrations in 2021, 3.5 percentage points more than in 2020.
